National Geographic Traveler calls Tuscany one of their top 50 Places of a Lifetime. Castellare di Ugnana rests in the heart of Tuscany. |
Originally this castle was one of the oldest outposts on the Etruscan road connecting Volterra and Fiesole, overlooking the valley of Greve in Chianti, in the wine region of the same name. Historical documents exist dating back to the year 1,085 mentioning a donation from the castle to a nearby abbey.
During the centuries it was owned by the Capponi family. It was used as a military headquarters during the wars between Florence and Siena. The remnants of the castle have now been fully restored by the owners, Roberto and Christine Zecca, and stands as a splendid example of the medieval architecture.
Castellare di Ugnana is about a thirty minute drive South of Florence, Italy.
